A $1.3 million grant was granted to Harris County to fund the construction of three soccer fields at Precinct Four’s Alabonson Park. Many of the surrounding neighborhoods suffered serious flooding during Hurricane Harvey, including the Parkland Place neighborhood adjacent to the east side of the park. The southern half of the proposed parklands were inundated by flood waters during the hurricane. These fields, one regulation size and two practice fields, will provide much needed athletic and recreation space for the community while also serving as flood mitigation, preserving an area that can safely retain water in future floods.
Status: Construction got underway in October 2020 and was completed in the spring of 2022.
All funds have been disbursed.
“This important step in our recovery from Hurricane Harvey provides recreational opportunities and flood relief for the area.”
Harris County Commissioner R. Jack Cagle
